School is out, baseball season is in full swing, and coats are packed away until next winter. It’s a time of new beginnings and a great time to get a little healthier.

You don’t need to make a big change, like training for a marathon or becoming a vegetarian (unless you want to). For employees across Alliance Coal, 2015 is a year to discover how even one small change can have a positive impact on your health, mood, and energy levels.

“Coal miners work hard to provide electrical energy for our country, but what about their own personal energy? Too often people have days where they feel wiped out, stressed, or depressed,” says NP Deidre Hill from the Health Center at Gibson South. “Summertime is an opportunity to take healthy new steps that will boost your energy so you can enjoy the people and activities that matter most.”ine small change

Summer is a great time to try …

  • New fruits and veggies. Lots of healthy produce is in season during the summer. Look for old favorites and new varieties in the grocery store and local farmers’ markets. Check out the easy recipe for grilled vegetables on the back page of this newsletter.
  • A new outdoor activity. Dig that bike out of the garage, try some local hiking and walking trails, rent a kayak or canoe, or set up lawn games like cornhole or lawn darts. Anything that gets you outside and moving is a step in the right direction!
  • New stress relievers. Spending time doing things that make you happy is the best way to relieve stress. Try gardening, putting on some music and dancing with your kids, or taking daily walks with a friend or a pet. Or spend a little quiet time alone.
