Rethink Your Drink

water splash in glass isolated on whiteThe average American consumes over 130 pounds of sugar every year. That’s more than twice the amount recommended by the World Health Organization. Over half the sugar we consume is in the form of sodas, sweet tea, and other sugary drinks.

“It’s really become an epidemic,” says NP Kim French from the Health Center at River View. “It’s easy to get hooked on these tasty drinks. They have a lot of sugar and calories, which often lead to weight gain and contribute to health problems such as heart disease and diabetes. And, we all know how bad sugar is for dental health.” read more…

Walk This Way: The Health Benefits of Walking

Happy young family spending time together outside in green nature.

Walking is a low-impact exercise that’s easy, free, and good for your body and your mind! So, take advantage of the summer weather, lace up your sneakers, and head out for a walk.

Walking 30 minutes a day:

  • just 4 days a week can reduce risk of diabetes by nearly 60%,
  • can burn 7 lbs of body fat a year,
  • can drop systolic blood pressure by 6 points, and
  • can reduce risk of heart disease by 50% and lower cholesterol.

Walking dramatically increases cancer survival rates — by 50% in women with breast cancer and 50% in patients with prostate cancer.

Walk yourself into a better mood: Studies show that even a 10-minute walk lowers cortisol levels (cortisol is a stress hormone), immediately improves your mood, and makes you feel happier.

Tick & Mosquito Alert

masquitoAs you enjoy the outdoors this summer, protect yourself and your family against two potential hazards:

Mosquitos and West Nile Virus
The mosquito population is greater than ever, thanks to all the rain this spring — increasing the risk of West Nile. The best way to avoid West Nile is to prevent mosquito bites in the first place. Wear long sleeves, pants, and socks when weather permits, and use insect repellent for extra protection. Avoiding the outdoors at dusk and dawn, when mosquitos are most active, can also help.

Ticks and Lyme Disease
Check for ticks after being outdoors. Removing them within 24 hours dramatically reduces your chance of getting Lyme disease. If you do show symptoms, including a rash and fever, see your doctor or health coach right away.

Being Built to Last Takes Energy

POWER for LIFE wordmark

Coal miners work hard to provide electrical energy for our country, but what about their own personal energy? Too often, people have days where they feel wiped out, stressed, or depressed. And that’s not good for anyone—the individual, their family and friends, or even co-workers. read more…

Easy Grilled Veggies

Green asparagus on charcoal grill. Square crop

Grilling brings out the flavor in a wide variety of vegetables without adding a lot of fat or calories. Use this recipe for a simple and healthy addition to your next cookout.

  1. Choose a vegetable. Corn on the cob with husks removed, bell peppers cut into large chunks, asparagus, and zucchini sliced lengthwise are great choices.
  2. Add a little oil and seasoning. Rub the vegetables with just a little extra virgin olive oil or canola oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Feeling more adventurous? Add other spices like chili powder or Cajun seasoning, or sprinkle with fresh herbs such as garlic, rosemary, thyme, or terragon!
  3. Grill 8 – 12 minutes. Heat your grill to medium high and grill the vegetables, turning often, until crisp and tender.
